Everglades National Park is located to the west of this Miami county. It supports a vast array of plant and animal life. Its tropical climate and natural resources are just two of the factors that make Miami-Dade County a remarkable place for seniors to live.
Seniors who live in Miami-Dade County also have access to generous financial incentives like Senior Exemption, which is a property tax benefit. In addition, the county provides a number of different fun and engaging activities designed with seniors in mind. Below are some enriching activities in which Miami-Dade seniors can participate:
Miami-Dade seniors can meet up and socialize in senior centers like the Haitian American Senior Center, Jack Orr Senior Center and the Miami Gardens Senior Focal Point Center.
The Haitian American Senior Center operates programs targeting seniors of the Haitian American community; particularly those who live in or around Little Haiti. The center has a daily offering of nutritionally-rich snacks and lunches. This makes it an ideal hangout for seniors who live alone.
The Jack Orr Senior Center offers its seniors the opportunity to participate in leisure, recreational, educational and cultural activities.
The Miami Gardens Senior Focal Point Center offers:
• Recreational programs
• Educational programs
• Information and referral programs
• Caregiver assistance
• Legal services.
Additionally, the center operates an initiative called the EHEAEP (Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program).
These and other Miami-Dade County senior centers are especially important as studies have revealed that socializing among seniors can assist in:
• Lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s disease
• Reducing the risk of cardiovascular issues
• Lowering blood pressure
• Lessening the risk of mental health issues.
Hiking, Biking, Trail Running or Walking
Miami is a big urban center; however, it is strategically located in close proximity to numerous nature trails. These trails are perfect for walking, biking, jogging, hiking and other outdoor activities. The Shark Valley Trail in Everglades National Park covers 15.8 miles. It is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, trail biking, walking, running and bird watching. Other trails include:
• Shark Valley Birdland’s Tamiami
• Everglades National Park Bobcat Boardwalk
• Otter Cave
• Oleta River State Park
• Trail to Miccosukee Cultural Center
According to the National Institutes of Health, engaging in outdoor physical activities can assist in delaying or lowering the risk of some medical conditions. These include stress, depression, high blood pressure, arthritis, heart disease and diabetes in seniors. Additionally, it is recommended by the National Institute on Aging that seniors should participate in moderate to intense physical activities. This enhances cognitive function during the senior years. Essentially, being physically active is crucial for healthy joints, bones and muscles.
Active Older Adults Program
This program is the brainchild of the Miami-Dade County Parks and is designed to target adults over the age of 54. The main aim of this seniors program is to get members to work out for a minimum of two and a half hours each week. Seniors also participate in local tourism and other fun and rewarding activities.
Members of the Active Older Adults Program can also participate in tennis, water-based exercises, swimming lessons, yoga, adaptive aquatics, Snag golf and sewing classes. Additionally, program participants can become members of the EnhanceFitness program. In this program, focus is placed on cardio conditioning, strength training and flexibility. Classes are held 3 times a week at South Dade Park, the Arcola Lakes Senior Center, Gwen Cherry Park, Continental Park, Goulds Park, Westwind Lakes Park and Deerwood Bonita Lakes. Other fitness activities include Tai Chi classes, self-management workshops and Zumba classes.
Free Arts Tickets
The Golden Ticket is a program operated by the Miami-Dade County. It enables adults over 61 years to go to cultural events free of cost. These seniors can also get free rides on the county’s mass transit system. It should be noted, however, that to qualify for this program, the free tickets must be presented in person with a valid photo ID.
The senior years are typically the ideal time for older adults to immerse themselves in fun activities. Take the time to discover the things that make you happy and fulfilled. As long as you have the physical ability, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from continuing to live a rich, fun-filled life. Go ahead and participate in the activities that you have been longing to do and just couldn’t find the time to accomplish. As an active, independent senior, you can keep your mind, body and spirit engaged in fun, fulfilling activities.
